The Basics of Baking
The First Chapter

Where to get started?
The year 2020 has given us the pandemic, a lot of free time, and the perfect time to learn something new.

Baking has taken over social media of late. Be it a mug cake to satisfy midnight cravings or a brownie for your friend’s birthday, almost all of us have tried baking something this quarantine season. Baking, not only gives rise to some yummy bread, but also some pressing questions. Where do I start? What do I need? How much of it do I need? And the SMOOR philosophy? Ask and we shall answer!

The essentials

The first and foremost essential that every beginner needs is an oven. No compromises there!

If you’re confused about the what type of oven to buy, ask yourself these questions:

  1. How often do you think you’re going to bake?
  2. For how many people are you going to bake?
  3. What’s your budget?

These questions should help you narrow down on a good oven.

Equip yourself!

You can undeniably find multiple varieties of baking trays, pans, and spatulas, and by all means, you’re free to buy them all! But because we’re talking about the essentials here, these are the must haves!

1. Square and round cake pans (preferably springform pans)

2. Baking trays and pans
Baking trays usually come with the oven, so you’re good to go!

3. A good mixing bowl
Every baker should have a mixing bowl dedicated to baking, and baking only! You could opt for a glass mixing bowl, or a steel one. Both work just fine!

4. A whisk
A whisk is the magic wand for beginners! It’s handy, easy to use, and not as expensive as an electric beater! A must have if you want to bake smooth, lump-free cakes!

5. A rubber/silicone spatula
A spatula undoubtedly makes life super easy by scraping off the leftover batter, spotlessly!

6, Measuring cups and spoons
Baking is like conducting a science experiment. You need to measure everything carefully for the best outcome, especially as a beginner. In the learning stage, it is advisable to follow all recipes to the T, without changing anything. Of course, once you get a hang of it, you’re free to create your own!

This covers everything that you need to keep ready before baking!
In our next chapter, we talk about sugar, spice and everything nice. But of course, your main ingredients. Stay tuned.

                                                 Happy baking!
